‘Hi Lisa, we hope you're doing well. On behalf of all the Smoke Signal staff, I wanted to thank you for coming in to talk about your work and your experience in the Smoke Signal. Your rhetoric motivated us as journalists, and moreover as people, and to be passionate about things we do. You also showed us how journalism is an interdisciplinary art, and how we can apply its skills into everyday life. Thank you for being such a positive role model that we, as student-journalists, can look up to. Be sure to revisit the next time you're in the area.
Thank you so much!’ Sincerely, The Smoke Signal Staff

TEACHING
Media literacy workshops, storytelling and public speaking
I lead sessions on how to tell your story using the tools of journalism, for kids and adults. I speak on news trends as well as basic tips and techniques of journalism. I can facilitate your live event, whether as an emcee or host.
|
WRITING
News, interviews, features and background
I am an award-winning news and features reporter. My focus areas are small business profiles of women- and minority-owned companies and start-ups; histories, including audio and video recording of oral histories; data journalism projects; and reporting that celebrates communities.

EDITING
Help with long-form writing projects
I can help you brainstorm your nonfiction book outline and content. I can troubleshoot your long-form nonfiction project or ghostwrite your book. My favorite thing is mentoring writers with big ideas.

"None of us knows how we will be getting the news a decade from now; I for one, hope we still get news, fingers crossed. That’s why we need more people to pick up the skills, sharpen their ethics and decide how it’s going to be done, rather than sitting around and watching other people do it."
